About

The StudyJapanese site is a free place for Japanese language learning and cultural exchange. A place where we learn together!

The site's prime feature is the Flash Card Trainer, containing lots of vocabulary and Kanji from several text books and other collections. You can also add your own vocabulary. The site also has other features such as a Language Reference section, containing grammar and other key points in Japanese. The dictionary and Kanji lookup are other useful tools for your studies. All of this is complemented with a number of beginner lessons, to get you started. The forum and chat lets you discuss language and other Japanese topics with other learners as well as native Japanese.

StudyJapanese Team

The site was started a few years ago by Johan Eliasson. He started this site as a hobby and a way to make a tool for Japanese Studies that he would like to use himself, hoping it would become a big lively place where people learn from each other. He now runs the site together with Daniel and a terrific editoral team.

The site is driven by an editorial team, with the intention to improve the content and to help other users. Currently, the team consists of the following people.

  • Maz - A Japanese airplane otaku who likes to help us Nihongo otakus
  • Shizu - A Japanese woman with a fantastic drive to help others
  • Daniel - A Swede who'd rather be in Japan.
  • Johan -  A Swede passionate about the Internet, cooking and Japanese

If you would like to participate, please contact Johan or the team. You can also start helping out immediately just by signing up and to start sharing vocabulary in the trainer or helping others in the forum.

Funding

This site is driven by the members and a lightweight team. All people are working pro bono - without any compensation.

We are, however, now looking at different options such as partnerships and advertisments to fund the ongoing operations, as we have outgrown our current settings, and would like to serve our users with a faster site and better quality. So if you would like to become a partner, and support StudyJapanese.org, please contact Johan at the address below.

Credits

A lot of work has been put into this site, but it wouldn't have been anything at all if it wasn't for all the devoted people giving away things for free on the internet.

Credits goes to
  • Jim Breen of the Monash University, for the great JMDict and KanjiDic Japanese dictionaries, that this site is using for the dictionary lookups. This site uses the EDICT and KANJIDIC dictionary files. These files are the property of the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group, and are used in conformance with the Group's licence.
  • the Joomla team who has built the free platform for web sites, that we built this site upon.
  • All Joomla component developers; for instance Mambo Joe and DJ Trail for the Community Builder component; Yuri Volkov for the Comments component;  The Fire Board team for the forum component; DewPlayer mp3 component; Shoutbox component from Batjo Extensions.
  • Kai Erste for loads of glossary used in the Trainer.
  • David Vignoni from Icon King for the Nuvola icons that are used at some places in this site.
  • Keith Smillie for most of the grammar section in this site.
  • www.kanjicafe.com have provided the Kanji stroke order diagrams you can find in the kanji dictionary.

Probably loads of other people should be attributed, but we can't remember if we downloaded and used anything else. Please freshen up our memory if you recognise someone missing.

I use the flash card trainer regularly and I love it. Thank you for your hard work!

I have a request - could you please include the Book "Basic Kanji" and "Intermediate Kanji" in the FlashCard trainer?

Thanks!
