How would you say "Oh jeez" in japanese? does anybody know...I say this probably more than i say hello...

I'm curious about this, too, although I suspect it will be hard to find something which has the same feeling as the English.

Although "gee" and "jeez" both derive originally from "Jesus," and once had the meaning of considerable surprise (あっ or あら, perhaps?), it is now more commonly used to express mild surprise, sometimes with a tone of sheepishness or self-deprecation.

英辞郎 provide many translations, and I guess it heavily depends on the situation. ... more precisely I do not understand the exact situation you say "Oh jeez". So lemme know it first.

Sorry about that-- I was joking.

"Oh, geez" is not used as a greeting (I'd have to strain very hard to invent a context in which it could be used that way.) I only said that because gaaragaara compared how much s/he says that to how much s/he says "hello."

Here's a situation where I might say "oh, geez." I have just made a tactless mistake based on an incorrect assumption about a friend's preferences. Another friend patiently explains this to me. I reply "Oh, geez, I should have known that," perhaps slapping myself lightly on the forehead as I say this.

Alright, in that case I might say,

* "あぁー/うわっ/うわー/うっわー、勘違いしてた"
(Aaa... / Uwa! / Uwaa... / U waa... , kanchigai shite_ta)

or like. The former part than the comma corresponds to "Oh geez" in this situation.


Here, 勘違いしてた (kanchigai shite_ta) means "I misunderstood that". Note in Japanese we don't usually say something equivallent to "I should have known that" explicitly.

I just saw "nan darou" translated as "oh, jeez" in a very bad television anime. The context: two characters are fighting a monster, and one of them has just realized something about it which he presumably did not realize earlier.

Does "nan darou" seem like a good equivalent for "oh, jeez" in this context?
