うーん...

When you say "nan darou" you just noticed the fact that there's something with the object.

On the other hand I guess when you say "oh geez", you have already realized some nature (usually negative one) in it, don't you?

So this is my guess:
* [are] nan darou? - what's that?
* nante kotta... - oh, geez...

Maz,

I looked up "nante kotta," and I think it is probably too strong and negative in affect.

"Oh jeez" is, if anything, rueful-- expressing mild regret-- but it doesn't even have to be negative at all. It can just express the fact that one was not expecting something.

Thanks for the clarification on "nan darou."

We could go on endlessly about this, couldn't we?

According to EDICT, the "gekidou" you're probably talking about means "terrible shock, agitation, upheaval"-- so it sounds unlikely to me. (There is also another word pronounced "gekidou," but spelled with different kanji, which means "drama" or "theatrical arts." ) But I have been led astray by dictionary definitions before.
