I looked up "nante kotta," and I think it is probably too strong and negative in affect.
"Oh jeez" is, if anything, rueful-- expressing mild regret-- but it doesn't even have to be negative at all. It can just express the fact that one was not expecting something.

pretty much, I just say (or mumble) "oh jeez" whenever my friends say someting odd or i say something odd that emberasses me...or I make a mistake on something stupid...things like that...

According to EDICT, the "gekidou" you're probably talking about means "terrible shock, agitation, upheaval"-- so it sounds unlikely to me. (There is also another word pronounced "gekidou," but spelled with different kanji, which means "drama" or "theatrical arts." ) But I have been led astray by dictionary definitions before.
