I personally do not feel it that *bad* at all when it is obvious just representing the short form of an adjective "Japanese", as in this case.

Saa. Perhaps you haven't had much contact with racist Americans.
As an adjective describing Japanese-made objects rather than people, the only context in which I have heard Americans use this word is in complaining about what they presumed to be cheap and poorly made imported items competing with goods made in the U.S.. As a noun standing for "Japanese person" or "person of Japanese descent," I have only heard it used in a derogatory manner.
