Lessons

icon_blackboard.png

In this section, you will find some basic lessons in Japanese. The lessons are divided into general lessons, pronunciation and writing lessons.

Even though the lessons cover the basic level of Japanese, we have tried to mix in some Japanese characters. This is to make you comfortable with the characters. If it looks to hard, use the roomaji (alphabet), and make a try with the Japanese characters later. The beginner lessons have numbers starting at 100, and advanced beginner lessons starting at 200.

100 - Beginner

These lessons focus on the language structure and basic vocabulary.

Language Basics

Pronunciation

Writing in Japanese

Learn the basics of writing and reading Japanese.

Games

Practise sheets to print out:

200 - Advanced Beginner

The advanced beginner lessons introduce casual and formal language.

Grammar

To learn more about Japanese Grammar and how the language is constructed, please refer to our Japanese Language Reference section.

Asking Questions

If you have a question about specific content in a lesson, you can use the "comment" function on the lesson page to do so. If you have a more general question, however, please ask it in the Japanese Language discussion forum (use the Discussion Forum link on the Main Menu). A member of the StudyJapanese team will usually get back to you pretty soon after you post a question there.

Contribution and Credits

The lessons are written by the StudyJapanese team. If you would like to contribute, please make a post in the forum or send us an email.

After reading Lessons 101 & 102, I found out he is wrong. Im really thankful for you guys. It is a big help for us that you interact and response to the visitor's questions.
Perhaps your friend was talking about a keyboard layout

tony
No, there is no such correspondence between the letters we use in English and the syllables of the Japanese language. Your friend may have been talking about about a keyboard layout which takes these letters and gives the Japanese syllables you listed, or what your friend told you may be complete nonsense. There are a couple of things listed there which are not single syllables-- rin, ari and mei-- and given how the other syllables are spelled, tu should be tsu.

You can find out about the Japanese writing system in lessons W101 through W104. There are links to them on this page.

i really wanna learn hiragana, kanji, and also katakana.
but why can't it show on my computer?
i alredy set the languange.
so, what should i do?
What a character means
27 Wednesday, 13 May 2009 09:53
tony
Therese, hajimemashite.
Hiragana and katakana have no meaning by themselves; they are purely phonetic symbols, like letters in the alphabet used in English, except that they represent syllables instead of single consonant or vowel sounds.
Kanji have both meanings and pronunciations-- but they can be pronounced differently depending on what word they appear in. It takes a considerable amount of time and energy to learn kanji.
When you are ready to ask more specific questions, please ask them via postings in the forum, or when other people are in the chat box, you can ask questions there.
Yoroshiku.
