The Kotori Song

In this mini lesson you will learn a famous Japanese children's song about small birds.

kotori song

This short song is sometimes sung by mothers for babies and small children. It's even sung for the baby in a pregnant mom's belly, lightly drumming on the belly in pace with the final bird's beeps. You can also exchange the word for mother, 母さん, and father, 父さん, for the baby's name.

Update: Unfortunately, the video has disappeared from YouTube, so you cannot hear the song sung. This page has the melody though. If someone would like to record the song and send it to us, we would be very grateful.

You can see the translation by holding the mouse over the hidden text.

But perhaps I am being swayed too much by the picture, in which there is only one bird, and no tori no kaasan or tori no tousan in sight.
kaasan to tousan

Are you sure that kaasan and tousan refer to the bird's mother and father? I would have thought they referred to the mother and father of the baby being sung to.
want more songs !
